Dirlot will show relative size of all elements (both files and folders) in a directory on disk using columnar diagram.
Dirlot allows you quickly to estimate how many space a file or subdirectory occupies on parent directory and how space is distributed among the directory’s elements.
Dirlot uses color coding to present size information, so bigger elements will be indicated with red and smaller one with green. It supports also localization so you’ll be able to make it speaking your native language.
In addition, Dirlot saves parameters of its appearance between sessions and can be controlled with command line parameters.

Free, Open-Source

You can get source code here: (you need to get README file first)
How to install Dirlot?

Install it through ‘Add-Powered-Up’ or ‘Click-To-Run’ (registration is optional).

When you open the program, press Alt+F9 to go to the panel, choose ‘Export’ from the ‘Tools’ menu.

Click ‘Browse’ button on the exported file and then select a location of the export file to save it.

Make sure the ‘Output file’ is set to ‘Bin’ and the ‘Current Directory’ is set to the parent directory.

Go to the directory where you want to save Dirlot settings, copy the exported file to this directory.

Open the exported file and copy the content of ‘Dirlot.properties’ file to this directory and rename it to ‘Dirlot.properties’.

How to use Dirlot?

Start Dirlot.

Choose one or more directories to scan in the ‘Select directory to scan’ panel. You will get a window as the following.

If you want to scan the directory recursively, click the check box of the ‘Scan recursively’ button.

If you want to scan only those subdirectories which have files that are bigger than 256 MB, click the check box of the ‘Scan subdirectories only containing big files’ button.

Click the ‘Scan’ button to scan files in the chosen directories.

When the scan is done, you will see information about items in the respective directories. If you want, you can see the size of both files and subdirectories. The ‘Size of file/folder’ depends on settings in the ‘File compression’ menu. It’s based on the number of bytes which are estimated as being the size of the file/folder. But it’s not quite exact so you won’t get 100% accurate values.

Use mouse scroll wheel and press the up and down buttons to zoom out or zoom in the diagram.

As you zoom out, you will get a table at the bottom with ‘Statistics’ section. Here you can see the number of big files, big subdirectories and big files/subdirect

How to install and start using Dirlot:

By default, Dirlot will assume directory name is current working directory. To define it as a parameter, enter –dir command line parameter.

2. On Linux and Mac, use “pwd” to change directory.
3. On Mac, you can also change a directory using Finder’s Go To My Computer… feature.

Windows users, Dirlot will use folder-specific option to analyze files. You can enter ‘/d’ (lowercase) or ‘%d’ (uppercase) to force Dirlot to analyze sub-folders or to analyze only their contents.

Dirlot has two main settings.

– “File Size” (see below) – controls amount of space a file occupies on disk.
– “Directory Size” (see below) – controls how much disk space a directory occupies and how its sub-directories are divided between them.

For complete list of options and help information, see
Dirlot Options and Settings documentation.

To change parameters during running, enter command line parameter -p.
It might take a moment to start: while Dirlot analyzes the directory, so you will probably see a progress bar as a message “Analyzing a directory”. Once it is done, check out Dirlot Help in order to learn more about its usage.
