When it comes to cloud-based storage and synchronization services there are two big names that usually come up: Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. While they’re pretty much on par in terms of features and functionalities, Google Drive offers more free space and, naturally, caters to a greater global audience thanks to its unique integrations with other Google services.
There’s not much one can reprimand to Google Drive since it’s great at allowing you to create, edit, store, and share documents, and basically all sorts of other files. Not only that, but it can be accessed on pretty much all platforms thanks to its dedicated mobile apps for iOS and Android, and remarkably well-sorted web apps (accessing via web browser).
What is G Desktop Suite and why you might need it?
Sadly, in September 2017, Google announced that it would discontinue the Google Drive desktop app. Therefore, if you’re tired of having to access Google Drive via a web browser (and potentially mix it up with other tens of tabs), then you could check out a third-party app called G Desktop Suite.
It’s basically an ElectronJS-based application (a desktop wrapper to be more precise) designed to run remotely on your desktop (by emulating the functions of a web browser). Being an Electron-based app, you should not expect the app to be lightweight, but that does not mean that your modern computer’s performance will take a toll while running it. It’s also not as fast as the web app, but it’s not what one might call a hindrance.
The main reasons why G Desktop Suite is worth trying out
The main advantage of the app is, of course, the fact that it allows you to work with Google Drive in a more “enclosed” environment and outside your browser.
It brings to your desktop all the functionalities, features, and little niggles of Google Drive (Google Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Forms are all integrated within), and it even has a Dark Mode to make working at night a little more bearable, and that’s pretty much about it.
Given the circumstances, the principle behind G Desktop Suite is a valid one. You can argue that Electron apps have some disadvantages, and that a native Windows app would have been far superior, but the truth of the matter is that we don’t actually have one at the moment, making G Desktop Suite one of the few good alternatives, and definitely one worth checking out.

The app is not free, but there is a free 30-day trial version available (upon request), which gives you the chance to try out the app, and see whether it lives up to the hype. From there on, you’ll have to shell out money for a subscription, and you get free OneDrive storage (so it’s actually not bad).
How to download the G Desktop Suite app on your Windows desktop
If you’re wondering how to install G Desktop Suite on your desktop, the instructions are pretty straightforward, and you’re going to be setting up the app as simple as it gets.
You can use either the Windows Store, or the official website to download the app, and the process is going to be the same for all versions of Windows:
Step 1 – Open Windows Settings
Step 2 – Click on Apps
Step 3 – Select the App Store, or the “Store” option, whichever you like, and press the “Show apps from this publisher” button
Step 4 – Type in “GC Suite”, select “Search” and press the “Search apps from the store” button
Step 5 – Select the app, and press “Install”. Press OK to confirm
Step 6 – Launch G Desktop Suite from your start screen or taskbar, and follow the onscreen instructions to set up your account and start using the app
How to download the G Desktop Suite app on your Mac desktop
While the instructions for macOS are similar to those for Windows, there’s a slightly more involved procedure, because of the fact that you’re going to need an app called “App Store” in the Mac Store to launch the app.
Step 1 – Launch your Mac and launch the “App Store” app from the menu bar
Step 2 – Look for the app, and press the plus sign next to it to add it to your Applications list
Step 3 – Launch G Desktop Suite via the “Application” tab in your App Store app (the one by your search field)
Step 4 – Proceed as normal until you’re asked to register the app
Step 5 – Open the “More” tab (the one after your search field), and go to the Account tab
Step 6 – Click on your Apple ID, and confirm the details
Step 7 – Click on the “Continue” button in the lower right corner,

Nah, you’re much better off buying an actual Dropbox Pro account (affiliate link) which will have a monthly cost of $10 per month, but it will include 100GB of cloud storage and the ability to upload unlimited files. Of course it’s an option to pay an annual fee and get an unlimited storage and more features, but Dropbox makes it pretty clear that it’s not a “whole life” investment. Still, whatever works for you.
The Google Talk browser extension was supposed to make video calls using Skype, Google Talk, and Facebook Chat work on any browser, but that dream never came true. Even though it is possible to install the extension, the application is just a mess and you’ll have to edit a lot of things on your own. Here’s how you can make video calls on the most popular browsers.
Google Talk – Skype-style video calls. It seems that Google Talk hasn’t changed in a very long time. The browser extension is a mess and it doesn’t integrate any modern user interfaces, but you can use it. Unfortunately, you will need Google Chrome on most web platforms to do so, but it’s not too difficult.
First of all, you will need to install the Chrome extension. Once you’ve done that, you will be prompted to open the Google Talk web app. Now you can access a lot of stuff, but it seems that video calls aren’t supported.
To access any webcam you have to head over to the main Gtalk page and navigate to the record video button on the bottom left-hand side. There, you will be prompted to select the resolution or quality of your video call.
To record a video call, click on the green button at the bottom of the screen and video call will start.
As you can imagine, things can get pretty time consuming. If you don’t want to waste a lot of time, you can use the Gtalk Chat for Mac. This app lets you use a huge variety of features such as documents, presentations,
G Desktop Suite Free
If you want to access your Google Drive outside of the “cloud,” G Desktop Suite will do just fine for you. With that in mind, the application is accessible via the Windows Store, and can be downloaded and installed in a matter of minutes.
Yes, you can use this for any Google Docs, Spreadsheets, and Slides, but naturally, those belonging to Google Drive, Google Sheets, and Google Forms are free of charge.
It will actually import your Google Drive account, but you’ll have to choose whether you want to sync or replicate them. You can then access your files on your desktop. And you won’t need to “manage” your files and files as you might with a cloud solution.
The app supports a number of cloud-based services and gives you many options for accessing them, but it won’t make any changes to them.
What you’ll be able to do with G Desktop Suite:
It’s pretty straightforward. You can access and edit Google Drive files, as well as collaborate with them. You can also install extensions, though the app doesn’t actually use them.
If you have a Google account, you’ll be able to access all of your Google Drive files. This includes documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, music, and videos.
You can even collaborate on documents and make changes to them (and I assume if you want to share the document, you can).
G Desktop Suite lets you download files and manage them, and it’s fairly straightforward. You can view them, edit them, as well as delete them.
You can also change your account’s download limit, which can range from 10GB to unlimited. However, you’ll be able to access your files and files only.
Regarding security, the app doesn’t seem to be very trustworthy. You can log in using your username and password, but the app does not seem to be fully secured.
Although the app doesn’t pose a problem with security, it could be a nasty affair if you use a shared computer. All of your files will be readily available, which could be a major problem if you’re one of those with a sensitive work-related password (I don’t advise you to share such a password with anybody).
One final thing worth mentioning is the fact that, on the upside, G Desktop Suite is
What’s New in the G Desktop Suite?
G Desktop Suite is an official Google Drive desktop app, and in terms of looks, you can safely say that the app does not disappoint. It is far from fancy, having a relatively simple interface which is intuitive, yet not overly minimalist.
You can view and edit your files, collaborate with others, create, edit, share, and store files, links, and more. It also supports the viewing of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. There is also a Notes and To-Do list integration, as well as a simple desktop search.
It supports actions and notifications, contact management, and web links to your Google Drive and other popular online services. More importantly, the app features multiple themes and it’s also completely customizable, whether it’s through a customization interface, or customizing HTML and CSS code.
On top of that, you can also set up shortcuts. Take a look at the video below to get a better idea of how the app works, and to discover all of its features in a little more detail.
Download G Desktop Suite:
If you’re curious as to whether G Desktop Suite is worth trying out, or not, you can either download the app directly from Github, or download it via a website mirror. G Desktop Suite can be downloaded as a zip file containing a “setup” file that you can run or install manually.
G Desktop Suite is a freeware application, and it comes with no installation or trial limitations. To add to that, you can also get it directly from the developers who are very keen to release any bugs found or issues that may arise.
Therefore, G Desktop Suite is one of the few official Google Drive desktop apps out there (as of this writing, anyway). As mentioned earlier, it offers a lot of functionality and features, and you can sign in using your Google Account (like your main Google Drive account). It also supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and even Android and iOS devices, so you can access your files anywhere, regardless of what OS you’re using.
G Drive vs G Desktop Suite:
As mentioned earlier, G Drive is a web app while G Desktop Suite is a desktop app, and it’s not unreasonable to say that they’re both great in their own ways. Also, due to the fact that G Desktop Suite relies on browser integrations (being an Electron-based app), it will be limited to working on Windows PCs that have a capable
