If you wish to use the power of RenderMan within your 3ds max projects, you’ll need to use paxRendus. In most cases, this will mean rebuilding your shaders from the RIB files and then apply them to your models in 3ds max.
If you use 3ds max 5, no compilation is required at all. After installing PaxRendus, your shaders will be precompiled on the fly, and the only “compilation” you’ll need to do is to tell each renderer which renderer you are using.
PaxRendus provides two main compilations. The first is for the default type of render engine, and the second is for when you wish to use the AO and Caustic options.

PaxRendus (PAx for short) is a cross-platform add-on module for various 3D rendering programs designed to enable the user to utilize RenderMan Shaders and other features of RenderMan.

PaxRendus RIB Creation:
Before you can use RenderMan with PAx, you have to create a RIB (Shader Inbox Description). A RIB is a text file that contains instructions for 3ds max to tell it how to render an object. It has to go into a *.slb or *.slq file for a shader to work.
For the sake of efficiency, it is recommended you create a new RIB file from scratch, rather than starting from the default (which is empty).
The steps to creating a RIB file are the same no matter how many shaders your object contains. To create a RIB file, proceed to the “PaxRendus Init” menu:
Create or open a new file in the “Presets” folder.
Create or open a new file in the “Shadow” folder.
If you are creating a new file, select a file name, with the exception of “.slq” or “.slb”, and click “Ok”. If you are opening an existing file, click “Ok” when the file name box appears.
Select the option to “Post Script.”
Choose a location for the RIB file. All RIB files are saved to disk and are not saved to RAM. The default location is the presets folder in your 3ds max installation directory. It will be saved in a subfolder, called “PaxRendus” by default.
Type in the “Description” and “Comment” boxes. The Description box contains text describing the object or scene to be rendered by your RIB. The Comment box contains comments or instructions for the object or scene.

What’s New in the PaxRendus?
If you have tried RenderMan before and want to get to know it even more, then PaxRendus is for you.
PaxRendus starts by asking you what kind of RenderMan renderer you want to learn. You choose between AIR and DXR and the system configures the program for this output renderer.
PaxRendus assumes you are familiar with most of 3ds max’s native shaders, at this point you aren’t told anything that you don’t already know.
PaxRendus then browses the list of available renderers and presents them in a hierarchical way.
After the step is complete, you can start to play around with the features of each renderer.
The first renderer to check out is DXR.
The DXR documentation should be your first stop.
The other renderer is AIR, which you can now also check out.
After you have a grasp of all the features of DXR and AIR, the other advanced renderers will seem much easier to grasp.
You can choose a renderer for use by clicking on the EXE file and the EXE will execute.
At the end of the step, you will be given a choice of which file you wish to load. You are presented with a list of options and can choose the file you wish to load.
At any point during the process, if you close the program, the EXE file will execute again.
PaxRendus now knows what kind of devices each renderer supports.

If an area light is selected, you will see the settings for the LightDescriptor.
