Photoshop Elements is a free program that enables you to perform basic editing tasks. It does not include every feature available in Photoshop, but it’s useful for creating home and business graphics.
In this book, we use Photoshop CC to illustrate how to perform basic and more advanced image editing tasks.
Photoshop also has a built-in web-publishing capability that enables you to output image files in a variety of formats. A number of options are available, including the following:
The original Photoshop files (in Photoshop’s native.PSD format)
JPEGs (for a greater level of compression)
WebP (best used for extremely high-resolution images)
Photoshop also lets you save a variety of file types in the Photoshop Information Panel, which displays a file’s basic information at the bottom of the Photoshop window. Figure 1-1 shows the File Types window with a color JPEG file opened; this window lists all of the file types that Photoshop can save.

Calculating and manipulating image size
Photoshop allows you to determine the size of your final output with the following calculations:
Pixel dimensions: A pixel is the smallest unit of information used to display a digital image. Pixel dimensions tell you the file size of the image. For example, an image saved with a pixel dimension of 72 x 72 is a 72-pixel × 72-pixel image.
Graphics area size: Photoshop calculates the size of the image by using an area called the Graphics area size. The Graphics area size indicates the size of the rectangular area that the image appears on the computer screen. You can specify the Graphics area size before saving your image. For example, in Figure 1-2, the size of the image is set to 1,920 pixels wide and 1,080 pixels tall.
Print size: Photoshop also calculates the print size for you (see “Printing Your Work” later in this chapter).
**Figure 1-2:** Use the Graphics area size to save the image to a preset size.
You can change the Graphics area size in the image’s properties window by using the Size/Move window in the right side of the Photoshop workspace.

Photoshop Elements for Windows
Important: Microsoft has reached out to us and agreed to let us tell you about a new, free product that may or may not be of interest. We are working on a separate full review but wanted to provide you with the news here.
Microsoft has said it is phasing out Gifsii, a visual editor for GIFs, web pages and more. It’s been out of support for years, and currently, it’s primarily for Windows Phone users. One of Gifsii’s co-founders, Alexandre Damiand, recently took to Twitter to announce that Microsoft is not paying him any more, and is discontinuing further development.
You may be better off looking for a new visual editor right now. But if you’re a Windows user and just want to continue using Gifsii, you’re out of luck.
“We are moving on to our next journey — with a new team, new direction, and new ambitions,” Damiand posted. “I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished so far. But we have been with Windows for so long now, we feel a bit nostalgic to move forward in this Windows tech world, so we decided to go our own way. We wish you the best!”
In the future, Damiand said the team might consider something like that again. He said it’s just not worth the effort to keep a team and try to continue working on what has become obsolete.
Gifsii is available for Windows 10 and macOS, but there’s no clear indication if or when Microsoft will start offering it as a paid app or replace it with a paid version.

This is a breaking story. Stay with WICB 16 News for updates. The strange case of film rights at MGM is not over.
According to Variety, the studio has struck a deal with Gary Ross to direct a remake of the 1954 sci-fi classic “The Thing” as their next action-adventure. For those unfamiliar, the original film was the first of a trilogy in which a group of American soldiers get stranded in an Antarctic base where a deadly alien creature is discovered. Despite winning a special Edgar Award as the year’s best feature at the 2nd BAFTA Awards, the original has gone largely unadapted for a remake ever since.
Ross is the second director to be locked into the project, following a director who was hired last year and then fired for undisclosed reasons. The studio is planning to cast the movie with an unnamed actor who previously appeared in “The Hunger Games” and “Apollo 18.” The original was directed by John Sturges, an icon of the genre.
The original film was originally shot in Cinemascope, but the studio has now decided to convert the film into a 70mm presentation.
Sturges has already met with the studio to discuss this and other projects. However, the studio claims he is opposed to a remaking of his work.
MGM is also in the process of re-editing the original for a more modern audience, stripping out some of the story in order to make the original more suitable for modern audiences. The studio claims this is an “enrichment process.”
In the past, the studio has been rumored to be working on a remake of the 1948 western “Red River” and perhaps will remake “The Tarnished Prince,” which they originally released as another Ed Wood project
